The Invisible Threat: Ocean Microplastics Are Spreading Rapidly

Plastic pollution is no longer limited to “trash floating on the ocean surface.” Much smaller and nearly impossible to detect, microplastics are rapidly infiltrating the world’s oceans. Recent reports show that microplastics have been found in at least 23 major marine ecosystems, reaching deep-sea environments and even remote islands.

These tiny particles are often mistaken for food by marine animals, leading to digestive blockage, malnutrition, and the introduction of harmful chemicals into marine ecosystems and the human food chain. Due to their tiny size and the difficulty of monitoring or removing them, microplastics are considered an “invisible threat,” reminding us of the urgent need to reduce plastic use at the source.

In recent years, countries around the world have been promoting alternative materials, plastic reduction policies, and biodegradable packaging solutions. Reducing single-use plastics remains the most direct and effective way to prevent microplastics from continuing to spread.
